Subscription vs Traditional Law Firm: What Tech Businesses Actually Pay

Law 365 Subscription Model compared to traditional law firms
Contents

One of the most significant, and least discussed, costs facing UK tech businesses, MSPs, and SaaS founders is unplanned legal expenses. For CEOs and COOs making commercial and employment decisions without in-house legal resources. This article explains how the Law 365 subscription model works in practice, what it costs, and how it compares to instructing a traditional law firm only offering a pay-as-you-go billing style, so you can make an informed decision about how to protect your business.

What This Means for Your Business

For most small to mid-sized tech businesses, legal costs are reactive. Something goes wrong, you instruct a solicitor, and the bill arrives. A subscription model replaces that uncertainty with a fixed monthly cost, a set number of hours, and access to specialist advice without the clock running every time you pick up the phone.

    1. How the Law 365 Subscription Model Works

Law 365 offers monthly subscription plans on 3, 6, or 12-month terms, as well as quarterly subscription options. All plans include a minimum of 5 hours of legal time per month, used during the billing period or lost. Hours cover commercial, non-contentious employment legal matters, and legal training.

Monthly subscription pricing (from April 2026) is as follows:

    • 3-month subscription: From £1,675 per month (Based on 5 hours per month)
    • 6-month subscription: From £1,600 per month (Based on 5 hours per month)
    • 12-month subscription: From £1,550 per month (Based on 5 hours per month)

Quarterly subscription options are also available from £1,650 per month (6-month term) and £1,800 per month (12-month term), with 15 hours available per quarter. Hours on the quarterly plan can be rolled across months within a given quarter but cannot be carried into the next quarter.

The longer the commitment, the lower the monthly rate.

    2. How Law 365 Subscription Costs Compare to Traditional Law Firm Billing

Traditional law firms typically only charge by the hour. For specialist employment or commercial lawyers at a London or regional firm, hourly rates commonly range from £250 to £500 per hour for partner-level advice. A single Employment Tribunal response, settlement agreement, or TUPE process can easily consume 10 to 20 hours of billable time.

On a traditional model, that means:

    • A settlement agreement negotiation: typically £1,500 to £3,000 or more in legal fees.
    • An Employment Tribunal defence: commonly £5,000 to £20,000+ depending on complexity.
    • A contract review or policy update: £1000 to £2,000 depending on scope.

For businesses dealing with more than one or two legal matters per year, the subscription model is typically more cost-effective and provides greater commercial certainty.

    3. What Is Included in a Law 365 Legal Subscription

Hours used under the subscription cover commercial, non-contentious employment legal matters and legal training. This includes day-to-day advisory work that tech businesses typically need on a recurring basis.

Subscription hours can be used across:

    • Employment contracts, offer letters, and policy reviews.
    • Tailored contracts to suit your businesses partnerships and deals
    • Commercial contracts and supplier agreements.
    • Client agreement reviews and negotiations
    • Tech sector specific legal advice and documents
    • TUPE and business restructuring advice (non-contentious).

    4. Subscription Flexibility and Contract Terms

Subscription plans are available on 3, 6, or 12-month terms, allowing businesses to choose the level of commitment that suits their current stage. Hours must be used during the billing period on monthly plans, otherwise they are lost. Quarterly plans allow hours to be rolled across months within a quarter, giving more flexibility for businesses with variable legal needs.

Key commercial terms to be aware of:

    • Minimum term: 3 months on monthly plans, 6 months on quarterly plans.
    • Hours: minimum 5 per month on monthly plans, minimum 15 per quarter on quarterly plans.
    • Unused hours on monthly plans do not roll over.
    • Quarterly plan hours can be rolled across months within the same quarter only.
    • Additional hours or services can be accessed on a pay-as-you-go basis

Subscription plans are subject to Law 365 Terms of Business and Fair Use Policy.

    Why This Matters in Practice

    • Unpredictable legal spend, Hourly billing creates cost uncertainty that is difficult to budget for, particularly for growing tech businesses with variable legal needs.
    • Delayed advice, Without a retained relationship, businesses on traditional models often delay seeking legal advice until a problem escalates, increasing both risk and cost.
    • Unused legal entitlement, Businesses that pay for legal advice reactively often underuse it, leaving commercial agreements outdated and legally exposed.
    • No relationship continuity, Ad-hoc law firm instructions mean starting from scratch each time, with no retained understanding of the business, its contracts, and the industry they operate within.

    Why Law 365

Law 365 is built exclusively for UK technology businesses, MSPs, SaaS companies, and Microsoft Partners.

    • Specialist knowledge of the tech sector, including Framework Agreements, SaaS contracts, and Microsoft Partner agreements.
    • Fixed monthly cost with no unexpected bills for day-to-day advisory work.

For UK tech businesses, the question is not whether you need legal support, it is whether the model you are using is working for your business. Paying hourly rates reactively, without a retained relationship or predictable cost, leaves most businesses both overcharged and under advised.
