Why Law 365 Might Be the Wrong Fit for a Non-Tech Business
Contents
Most law firms will tell you they can help anyone. We are going to tell you something different. Law 365 was built specifically for UK technology businesses, and that specialism is deliberate. It means we are exceptionally good at what we do for tech, MSP, SaaS, and Microsoft Partner clients, and it means we are probably not the right firm if your business sits outside that world.
What Law 365 Was Built For
Law 365 was created to serve small to mid-sized UK technology businesses that need specialist commercial or technology legal support. Our clients are typically businesses in the tech sector who are making high-stakes legal decisions and deals.
1. What Makes a Good Law 365 Client
Our subscription model is designed around the legal needs of growing tech businesses. The issues we handle day-to-day include partnership and reseller agreements, SaaS and software agreements, TUPE in outsourcing transitions, Microsoft Partner contracts etc. Understanding the commercial context behind the legal question is what makes the advice useful.
Law 365 works best for businesses that:
- Operate in the UK tech, MSP, SaaS, or Microsoft Partner ecosystem.
- Have between 50 and 250 employees
- Need recurring commercial and employment law support, not one-off transactions.
- Want a fixed monthly cost and a relationship with a firm that knows their sector.
- Are dealing with commercial contracts, partnerships or negotiations on a regular basis.
If this describes your business, the subscription model is likely to deliver clear value.
2. Where Tech Sector Specialism Actually Makes a Difference
For tech businesses, legal advice is most effective when it comes from advisers who understand how the sector operates in practice. Its critical to have legal expertise with a clear understanding of the technology industry, its commercial models, its contract structures and the issues that commonly arise having this knowledge and helps clients get advice that is practical, relevant and aligned with the way tech businesses work.
Sector context matters specifically when dealing with:
- Commercial contract drafting, review and negotiation
- Technology partner terms, reseller agreements and collaboration arrangements
- SaaS, software licensing and other technology service agreements
- Data protection, compliance and regulatory obligations
- Managing risk around liability, service levels, IP ownership and termination rights
A generalist firm can advise on these areas. A specialist firm understands them.
3. Signs Law 365 May Not Be the Right Fit
Our specialism is also our limitation. If your business operates outside the tech sector, you may find that a generalist firm or a sector-specific firm in your own industry serves you better. The subscription model also suits businesses with recurring legal needs. If you only need legal support once or twice a year, our pay-as-you-go arrangement may be more cost-effective.
Consider an alternative if your business:
- Operates primarily in construction, retail, hospitality, financial services, or healthcare.
- Needs specialist sector regulation advice, such as FCA compliance or CQC requirements.
- Has a large in-house legal team and needs only occasional external support.
- Requires primarily litigation or contentious legal services as its core need.
- Has very low and infrequent legal requirements that do not justify a monthly retainer.
We would rather be honest about this upfront than take on a client we cannot serve well.
Where Law 365 Is Not the Right Fit
- Non-tech businesses needing sector regulation advice, Law 365 does not specialise in FCA, CQC, or other sector-specific regulatory frameworks outside technology.
- Businesses needing primarily contentious legal services, Our subscription is designed for non-contentious commercial and employment matters; tribunal representation and litigation are available separately but are not the core of what we do.
- Very small businesses with minimal legal needs, If you need legal advice once or twice a year, a monthly subscription may cost more than ad-hoc instruction.
- Businesses outside the UK, Law 365 advises on UK law and is not equipped to advise on foreign jurisdictions or cross-border legal matters as a primary service.
Where Law 365 Works Best
Law 365 consistently delivers value for businesses that match the following profile.
- UK-based MSPs, SaaS businesses, and Microsoft Partners with 50 to 250 employees.
- Tech founders making commercial decisions without expert legal support.
- Companies dealing with IR35, contractor relationships, or outsourcing transitions.
- Growing tech businesses that want a fixed legal cost and a firm that understands their sector.
- Businesses that have outgrown ad-hoc legal instruction and need a retained relationship.
If your business is a UK tech company, MSP, SaaS provider, or Microsoft Partner with recurring commercial and employment legal needs, Law 365 is likely a strong fit. If it does not, we would rather you know that now than commit to a relationship that does not serve you well.
